Godwin Obaseki, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and incumbent governor of Edo State has won reelection for a second term of four years.
Obaseki defeated his closest rival, Ize-Iyamu, of the All Peoples Congress (APC), by tens of thousands of votes.
The Edo state governorship election which was held on Saturday, September 19, was largely peaceful as only a few skirmishes were recorded.
Obaseki was denied the opportunity to contest for reelection on the platform of the APC following a disagreement with his predecessor and former national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole.
He decamped from the APC and joined the PDP which gave him the party’s gubernatorial ticket.
In a curious twist of irony, Ize-Iyamu emerged the candidate of the APC. Ize-Iyamu contested against Obaseki four years earlier on the platform of the PDP.
Some political observers are already speculating that Adams Oshiomhole may take an early retirement from politics following the humiliating defeat handed his party by Obaseki.
The former labour leader had earlier lost his position as the national chairman of the APC following his fight with his former protege, Godwin Obaseki.
According to the results announced by INEC, Obaseki was re-elected with 307,955 votes or 55.96 per cent of the 550,242 total votes cast, while APC’s candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu came second with 223,619 of the votes or 40.64 per cent.
