A number of governorship candidates in Rivers State on Friday took to the street to protest what they termed as intimidation from the outgoing governor of the state, Nyesom Wike.
Some of the protesters included Senator Magnus Abe of the Social Democratic Party; Tonye Cole of the All Progressives Congress; Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Accord and Tonte Ibraye, the African Democratic Congress took their action to the state police headquarters.
“We have been victimised, intimidated and our members are being arrested,” Cole said.
“As we speak now, party members across the board are being arrested. The election cannot hold in this situation and that’s why we are here today.
“The police IG must instruct, very clearly that no politically motivated arrest should happen and everybody that has been arrested for political reasons must be released immediately. If they are not released immediately, then this election is in jeopardy.”
Senator Magnus Abe has had cause to complain that his campaign train had been severally disrupted by persons suspected to be loyal to the state government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike who is serving out his second term as governor is believed to wield high influence in the state.
