There is tension in Rivers state following the murder of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) campaign coordinator in Ahoada-West Local Government Area of the state, Chisom Lennard, hours after he was kidnapped on election day.
Lennard was reportedly kidnaped by the gunmen dressed in police uniform while voting was going on at Ibagwa polling unit 2, ward 10 in Ahoada West LGA.
The APC chieftain, it was gathered tried to stop the gunmen from snatching election materials when he was whisked away in a commando fashion.
Darlington Nwauju, the state’s APC publicity secretary, confirmed the incident.
“He was abducted from his Unit during the voting process and taken away,” Nwauju said.
“Nobody knew where they took him to. It was later in the evening of yesterday (Saturday) that his body was discovered. He was APC LGA Caretaker chairman and was a PhD student at the Rivers State University.”
Late Lennard’s body was riddled with bullets in a pool of his own blood along the Ibueahi-Ubeta road in Ahoada West LGA of the state.
Available information has it that the late APC chieftain was an estate surveyor and a former board member of the Greater Port Harcourt city development authority during the tenure of Rotimi Amaechi.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko said she will find out from the Ahoada Area command and get back to our correspondent.
The March 18 governorship and house of assembly elections were characterized by reports of attacks, kidnapping, and maiming of people who participated in the exercise while election materials were reported to have been carted away by some political hoodlums.
The election also recorded general lukewarm-ness as many people refused to come out to vote for candidates of their choice.
