The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has asked the Federal Government to end the ongoing strike by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to save the nation’s ailing education sector.
“The lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) which disrupts academic activities has dragged too long thereby affecting the quality of education in our country should be properly addressed,” CSN said in a communique issued at the end of the annual general meeting of the Department of Church and the Society.
The meeting was held between January 22 and 25, 2019 in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The CSN equally encouraged the government to continue the return of mission schools to their owners in order to complement government’s effort in restoring the lost glory in the educational sector.
It also encouraged the Federal Government and the labour unions to speedily conclude the issue of minimum wage ‘for the sake of the common good.’
According to CSN, if the huge salaries and allowances of political office holders were reviewed appropriately, funds would be freed to meet salary and pension obligations.
On insecurity, it lamented that current insecurity of lives and property across the country raises concern noting that incessant incidence of violence by organized armed groups, armed robbery, kidnapping and political assassinations demand urgent attention by stakeholders and Government.
This was as it also urged the Federal Government and the security agents to address the issues of extortion by armed security personnel along the roads across the nation.
But it kicked against the proposed use of tax payers’ money to build ranches across the country which primarily is a private business.
