A yet-to-be-identified person has been reported dead following a protest in Enugu on Wednesday over the sealing of businesses by the state government for obeying the sit-at-home order.
The protesters were seen in viral videos at the Ogbete main market marching with placards with different inscriptions.
They set up burn fire across the market as they march while a vehicle of police passed by.
On Monday, the Enugu government sealed two banks and 107 shops for allegedly observing “illegal sit-at-home order” in markets across the state.
The exercise was carried out by officials of the state government and Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) on Monday.
Chidiebere Onyia, the secretary to the state government (SSG), said the closure of the facilities was in line with the directives of Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu.
Onyia said the governor intends to “fight those that think they can intimidate us” and halt the economic setbacks of the sit-at-home order.
The sit-at-home order is being enforced by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to demand the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
