President Muhammadu Buhari says ECOWAS member states are working to end the growing coups in the region.
The Nigerian President spoke during the presentation of Letters of Credence from Ambassadors of Switzerland, Sweden, the Republic of Ireland, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Republic of Senegal, and the Republic of South Sudan, at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Thursday.
He said a system that would strengthen cooperation and collaboration among West African countries would most likely surmount these challenges.
He also sought synergy with friendly countries to support efforts at addressing the problem of insecurity, corruption, and economic diversification including efforts at promoting good governance.
Buhari reiterated his call to foreign government representatives not to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs, especially as the country prepares for the general elections, commencing February 25, 2023.
He warned, “I urge you to be guided by diplomatic practice to ensure that your activities remain within the limits of your profession as you monitor the build-up to the elections and the conduct of the general elections itself.
‘‘Let me also wish you all success in your respective tours of duty and at the same time encourage you to take time to enjoy the unique nature and culture at your disposal as you travel across our country”.
There had been coups in a number of African countries in recent times, some of which include Mali, Chad, Burundi among others.
The development had indirectly hampered democratic gains in the continent to an extent.
