Chief Earnest Shonekan, the head of the Interim National Government (ING) is dead. He was aged 85 years.
Shonekan, who succeeded former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, died in Lagos.
The ING was put in place by the Babangida-led military junta in the aftermath of the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.
Shonekan was ousted in a palace coup led by late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.
Shonekan, who hails from Ogun State, was a lawyer by profession and also served in many companies. He was onetime Chairman and Managing Director of the United Africa Company (UAC).
