The United States mission in Nigeria has confirmed that two members of its staff abducted during an attack on the consulate’s convoy along Atani/Osamela road in Ogbaru in Anambra have been rescued.
The police in the state on Friday said they had rescued two individuals who were involved in the Tuesday attack.
According to a statement by Ikenga Tochukwu, police spokesperson in Anambra, the rescue took place in the early hours of Friday.
He said a joint security force rescued the two victims unhurt.
The US mission while confirming the rescue of two of its staff, noted that they have informed their families of their “recovery.”
“Two U.S. Mission employees missing since the May 16 attack in Anambra state are alive and safe and under the protection of Nigerian authorities in Anambra,” the statement reads.
“We have informed their families of their safe recovery. U.S. Mission personnel are on their way to meet and accompany them home.“We continue to work intensively with Nigerian security and law enforcement on this matter, to identify the victims previously found, and to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous attack. We welcome any information the public may have in this regard.
“We are deeply grateful for the partnership and solidarity of the Nigerian government and Nigerian security and law enforcement colleagues, and mourn with them for those who died in the attack.”
The police on Thursday said that two suspects have been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s attack.
Speaking on the development on Thursday, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Echeng Echeng said a Joint Security Task Force comprising of police tactical teams and troops of the Nigerian Army and Navy, raided the suspects’ hideout at Ugwuaneocha community within Ogbaru LGA.
He said the security operatives upon arrival, met a deserted camp.
And while the camp was razed down, the Commissioner disclosed that two persons of interest have been arrested and are under interrogation by the police.
