The Ukrainian government is not recruiting Nigerians as mercenary fighters in their ongoing war with Russia, contrary to claims on social media.
According to a press release from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by Francisca Omayuli, “a number of Nigerians had approached the Embassy indicating their willingness to fight on the side of Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Furthermore, the Embassy clarified that the Ukrainian government is not admitting foreign volunteer fighters.”
The press release also stated that the Ukrainian Embassy disassociated itself from any demand of $1000 for visa and flight ticket to intending mercenaries.
Nigerian government stated that it does not encourage the use of mercenaries anywhere in the world in accordance with her international obligations and convention.
The government said it would continue to engage with the Ukrainian Embassy to prevent the possibility of Nigerians going to Ukraine as mercenary fighters.
