THE Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) says the Nigeria Police ranked as the most corrupt institution in Nigeria in its Corruption Survey.
This is coming on the heels of widespread protests calling for an end to police brutality and extortion perpetrated by the now-disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad unit of Nigeria Police
The SERAP revealed on its Tweeter handle Wednesday that the police were the most adversely ranked on the prevalence of bribery.
“For every 100 police interactions reported by the respondents, there was a bribe paid in 54 interactions,” it said.
In the Survey, the organisation said it made recommendations to the Nigerian Government which include establishing an independent commission of inquiry with subpoena power to conduct a transparent, comprehensive, and impartial investigation into systemic corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.
It also recommends the prosecution without delay and according to international fair trial standards anyone implicated in corruption and other serious abuses within the Nigeria Police Force
SERAP urged the Federal Government to improve financial oversight of the Nigeria Police Force, by asking Police Force to publish quarterly budget execution reports as well as order an independent financial audit of the Nigeria Police Force by a qualified auditing company and ensure that the audit report is made public.
