The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the the proper implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015 which prohibits all forms of violence against persons in both private and public life, and provides maximum protection and effective remedies for victims as well as punishment for offenders.
Ayuba Wabba, NLC President, who made the call in a statement he issued to celebrate this year International Day for the Women with Nigerian women said the Congress would continue to “advocate for the adoption and implementation of policies and strategies that promote gender equality in the workplace, Unions and the larger society.”
The statement in full:
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) wishes to congratulate working Women and indeed all women on this very important occasion of the 2018 International Women’s Day. This is indeed the right time to commemorate the political, economic and social achievement of Women.
The Congress felicitates with women globally on this year’s theme which is “Press for Progress”, while calling on all to support this noble course, we wish to reiterate our commitment to continually advocate for the adoption and implementation of policies and strategies that promote gender equality in the workplace, Unions and the larger society.
We salute the NLC National Women Commission on its campaign in support of the ILO Convention to “Stop Gender Based Violence at Work”. It is disheartening to note that violence against women and girls is the most widespread violation of human rights which occurs everywhere; at home, in schools, on the streets and at work, but often treated with impunity.
We therefore support the ILO Convention on Gender Based Violence for the realization and protection of women’s right, and increased productivity and dignity at work.
In the same vein, we call for the proper implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015 which prohibits all forms of violence against persons in both private and public life, and provides maximum protection and effective remedies for victims as well as punishment for offenders.
