The Nigerian Government says it has suspended the operations of the Microblogging site, Twitter in the country.
Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture announced the suspension on Friday in a statement according to multiple media reports.
“The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.”
He cited the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The action comes few days after Twitter deleted a divisive tweet by Nigerian President Mohammadu Buhari in which he threatened to deal with those fomenting troubles in the country in ‘ the language they understand’.
The president came under public criticism after the comment, following which the management of Twitter yanked-off the comment.
