He stated this in Abuja on Monday during a workshop on academic publishing organised for junior and mid-career lecturers from universities in the northern part of the country.
While emphasising the importance of publishing research works in appropriate journals to get global attention, Ramon-Yusuf called on the lecturers to ‘up their game’ by patronising international accepted journals.
He said: “In academia, your promotion is in your own hand based on the quantum and quality of work that you do, and the indication of the quality of your work is what journal has accepted it.
“Is it volume 1 number 1 journal that is not known beyond your campus? If you publish that way, certainly you will end up be a local champion and globalisation does not allow anyone to be a local champion.”
Speaking further, Ramon-Yusuf said the workshop, jointly organised by the Commission and the United Kingdom-based Enago Academy, is one of the measures taken by NUC to improve the global ranking of Nigerian universities.
joint pain birth control pills “The issue of academic publishing is very important and integral part of the NUC. Many people asked why are Nigerian universities not doing well? It may not necessary be that our academics do not work or do not research on interesting and important topics, part of the issue may be when you work and you publish in journals that are not well-ranked, your work is very unlikely to be ranked.
“Know where to publish is as important as to know where to research on and publish. The whole idea of the workshop is to propagate knowledge about how to improve research publication with a view to improving the visibility of Nigerian universities in the global committee of universities.
“If our people work hard and publish in high impact journals there is no way that such works will not be cited by scientists and other researchers in other parts of the world,” he said.
Declaring the workshop open, Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary of NUC, represented by Chiedu Mafiana, his deputy, called on the participants to take advantage of the interaction and channel more energy to the publication of their works in well-known journals.
He restated the commitment of NUC to always build the capacity of academics towards boosting the quality of university education in the country.
On his part, one of the resource persons from Enago Academy, Steve Ghosh, said similar workshops on academic journal publication carried out by the organisation in some other countries have resulted in improved ranking of universities.
