Okechukwu Enelemah, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, has charged the various professional and associations working with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), to optimize application of international standard in daily lives.
Speaking during the World Standards Day 2017 Symposium, with the theme, “Standards Make Smart Cities”, held on Monday in Abuja, Enelemah, represented by Aisha Abubakar, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, noted that the issues of building collapse, fire disasters, flooding, improper waste management, would be adequately dealt with if the various professional group works with the SON.
He added that “the critical issues of making our cities and buildings smarter from conceptualization, through design and construction, that provides for safety, access, good ventilation and aesthetics are some of the issues that the theme of this year’s world standard days is calling our attention to.
Enelemah described the role of standards as the benchmark for the provision of all services noting that “the advent of the global village has redefined international standards development and provided ample opportunity to nations to leverage on positive developments across the world; interact at a much faster rate than hitherto and enjoy the benefit of international standardization.”
Speaking at the event, Osita Aboloma, Director General, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, said the world standard day is celebrated annually, every 14th of October, that the 2017 theme ‘Standard Makes cities Smart’ will help look for ways in deploring standards in cities.
“Already we have smart cities in Nigeria, the Eko Atlantic city’s design to be a Smart city where different aspect of the cities will interact with each other to improve the quality of life of people in the cities; this is in line with foreign tread all over the world because people are migrating from the rural areas to the cities.” He said
