The Independent National Electoral (INEC) has confirmed a reported fire incident at its Akure office raising fears that the Ondo State governorship elections slated for October 10 may suffer delay.
Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee confirmed the incident, assuring that investigation to unravel the cause of the fire would commence promptly
Okoye who is currently in Ondo State to prepare ground for the coming governorship polls, it was gathered was called at about 8 pm Thursday following the the incident .
“The inferno, which gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers, started at 7.30 pm. Men of the Fire Service are however currently containing the fire,” he said in a statement.
“National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, who is in Ondo State in connection with preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for 10th October 2020, rushed to the office at about 8pm.
The Administrative Secretary of the State, Mr. Popoola and some staff of the Commission are also there, including Andy Ezeani and Nick Dazang .
“Barrister Okoye said investigation into the cause of the fire will commence promptly after the fire has been contained.”
