Enugu, the capital of Enugu state is in turmoil, according to eyewitness accounts.
Trouble started when some Department of State Services (DSS) operatives accosted Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members who were holding a meeting at St. Joseph’s Primary School, Emene.
Emene is on the outskirts of Enugu.
Emeka Nwanba Michael who witnessed the incident told Elendu Reports that “a truck load with DSS officers came to where IPOB members were having a meeting around 8 am.”
“They told the IPOB people to disperse. They disagreed and while they were arguing someone started shooting,” Michael said.
According to the witness, an IPOB member was killed and in retaliation the IPOB members shot and killed a DSS officer.
Before the officer’s body could be evacuated it was set on fire by IPOB members, he added.
Members of IPOB started destroying properties and shooting sporadically even as security forces reinforced.
An injured IPOB member was taken to a hospital in Enugu. The hospital refused to treat him and he died on the way to another hospital.
His colleagues continued in carrying out mayhem on the coal city.
A shoe hawker who was trying to pack his wares as the fracas started was killed and set ablaze.
Our sources in Enugu State told our reporter, “the situation has been contained. Operation to restore peace is on going by security operatives. ”
As of the time of filing this report, the State Government was yet to make any official statement on the incident.
