Two former governors, Joshua Dariye, Jolly Nyame, and two others who have been serving jail terms for corruption have been released from prison.
According to reports, the Council of State, led by President Muhammadu Buhari on April 14 approved the pardon of the convicts.
The two former governors, who are members of the All Progressives Congress, were convicted by Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Abuja High Court in 2018.
Dariye and Nyame were both jailed for stealing N1.16billion and N1.6billon, respectively.
They were both kept in Kuje Minimum Prison, Abuja and were at the facility when terrorists broke in last month.
Dariye, a former governor of Plateau State, was sentenced in June 2018 to 14 years in prison by the High Court over corruption allegations.
But his jail term was reduced from 14 to 10 years by the Court of Appeal in Abuja in November 2018.
The Appeal Court heard Dariye’s conviction was right, but his sentence should have been 10 years.
The Court ruled that the lower court erred in law when it sentenced Dariye, a first-time offender, to the maximum 14 years term contained in the charge against him.
