A subtle crisis is currently brewing between the management of Abia State University, Uturu and staff unions within the institution.
Elendureports gathered from a memo circulated on Thursday, to the media, that the management of the university, despite having received a subvention grant of N100 million from the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has the intention of offsetting the only 30per cent of June Salary.
The intention which does not go down well with the university staff unions has prompted them to raise alarm.
The Joint Consultative Committee of Staff Unions comprises of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities NASU, and National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT.
The memo entitled: “Percentage Payment of 30% June Salary” which was signed by the union heads, Victor Nkemdirim for ASUU-ABSU, Ojo Obasi for SSANU – ABSU and addressed to the University bursar reads:
“The campus-based industrial trade unions in Abia State University are aware of the release of N100, 000,000 by the governor, Victor Okezie Ikpeazu and the intention of the university management to pay 30% of June salary with the money.
“We, therefore, wish to inform you that the staff unions have resolved not to accept any percentage payment of salary in whatever guise as we feel, its an insult to the sensibilities of the workers in Abia State University, Uturu”.
