ECOWAS is to send delegations after military juntas in Guinea and Burkina Faso missed the April 25th deadline to submit political transition plans.
The ECOWAS Commission said it had received communications from both military regimes asking for more time for national consultations
The “missions will enable the preparation of a report” for next ECOWAS Summit, the Commission said.
The regional bloc had in March threatened sanctions over delayed political transition plans following military coups that toppled elected governments in both countries. Crippling regional sanctions imposed on Mali, also ruled by military, have been described as illegal by a West African Econonic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) Court.
