THE Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says Nigeria has recorded its first death from Coronavirus.
A statement by the Centre on Monday revealed that the former Managing Director of PPMC, Suleiman Achimugu, 67, who returned to Nigeria from United Kingdom (UK) two weeks ago was the victim.
“The 1st #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded,”NCDC wrote on Twitter.
“The case was a 67 year old male who returned home following medical treatment in UK He had underlying medical conditions- multiple myeloma & diabetes & was undergoing chemotherap.”
According to family members who did not want to be mentioned, Achimugu started exhibiting symptoms on Tuesday, following which the NCDC was contacted.
“They came to the house and took his blood specimen, but they never got back to the family,” said the source.
“As of yesterday afternoon, he was coughing profusely. So they called the NCDC to inquire about his results.”
The source said the result of the test showed that the late PPMC MD tested positive for the virus.
“They picked him up and rushed him to Gwagwalada but he died at 2am this morning.”
His family members are said to be currently under quarantine in their house while the NCDC it was gathered would handle the burial.
