Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Ademola Adeleke on his victory in the Osun State governorship election.

Atiku, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), described Adeleke’s victory as a reflection of the choice of Osun voters at the ballot box.

In a congratulatory message posted on his Facebook page, Atiku said: “I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State. His victory demonstrates the choice of the people of Osun as expressed at the ballot box.”

He also commended voters for their participation in the election and peaceful conduct.

“I commend the people for their passion and peaceful participation. I wish Governor Adeleke continued success as he continues to serve them,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, winner after he polled 511,067 votes.

His closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 444,815 votes, leaving Adeleke with a winning margin of 66,252 votes.

Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 17,180 votes.

Joshua Ogunwole, INEC returning officer for the election, declared Adeleke the winner after the final results were collated.

“I, Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, the returning officer, therefore declare that Ademola Adeleke of the Accord, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes in this election, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” he said.

The governorship election was held across Osun state on Saturday, with voters electing the governor for the next four-year term.
