THE National Caucus of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has adopted direct primaries for the selection of candidates that will run for elections in 2019 on the platform of the party.
This was part of the outcome of the National Caucus meeting of the party held Tuesday at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Sources at the meeting told Elendu Reports that the issue of ‘Direct Primaries’ was “thoroughly discussed” during the meeting.
Meanwhile, at a meeting of APC governors held earlier, it was agreed that governors would oppose Direct Primaries as the method for choosing candidates for 2019 elections.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole were at the meeting.
According to sources at the meeting, it was agreed that the contentious Direct Primaries would be used to determine candidates for the 2019 elections on the platform of APC.
However, states that are opposed to Direct Primaries may request exemption. Where the national executive is convinced on the reasons for the request an exemption may be granted.
The President and National Chairman expressed their preference for Direct Primaries.
The Caucus agreed that preference should be given to members who have been loyal and consistent with the party ideals in choosing candidates for the 2019 elections.
September 23, 2018 was chosen as the date for presidential Primaries while the 26th would be for National Assembly primaries.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which will be held on Thursday, 30th August will debate and adopt the decisions of the Caucus.
