Shehu Sani, Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly says it would amount to “dancing with the Python & sleeping with the Cobra, Viper,Mamba & Anaconda,” if the Federal Government upgrade the military arsenals and leave police and other security agencies behind.
Sani wrote on his Twitter handle on Friday in response to President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval of $1billion to buy arms for the arm in war against insurgency and other insecurity issues in the country.
“If we use a Billion dollar to upgrade our military arsenals to the 21st century while leaving behind our police in the 20th century and other security agencies in the 19th century, we will be dancing with the Python & sleeping with the Cobra,Viper,Mamba & Anaconda.” He wrote
The Senator on Wednesday first wrote on his Facebook that a “billion dollar to purchase arms will not make sense,” if the Federal Government failed to “factor the welfare and wellbeing of the officers and soldiers fighting the war.”
He advocated that “there must also be a special fund for the injured, the orphans and widows of our fallen soldiers.”
“A Billion dollar to purchase arms will not make sense if we don’t factor the welfare and wellbeing of the officers and soldiers fighting the war. A special fund for the injured, the orphans and widows of our fallen soldiers need also to be factored in. A weapon cannot fight a war without the men to use it.”
“We also need to remind ourselves that our Defence Industry is moribund, before we enrich arms manufacturers in other nations. Our self -sufficiency should not be about rice alone,” he said
Mansur Dan Ali, Minister of Defence announced after a security meeting the President had with Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa that “of recent, our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for the purchase of more equipment for the military, worth $1 billion.”
